Clay Dyer – Living Life and Bass Fishing Beyond the Limits

He’s Tough Enough to Play with the Big Boys

Click to enlargeEditor’s Note: Clay Dyer of Hamilton, Alabama, is an outstanding, unique and highly-successful individual and bass fisherman. Dyer has found a way to take what 90% of us would consider a disadvantage and turn it into a tremendous advantage. “I stand out at every fishing tournament in which I compete,” Dyer mentions. “I’m usually the only fisherman there with no hands, only a partial arm and no legs. I’ve discovered that to be successful in this industry, it helps to be unique. I don’t have to wear sponsor shirts, have my boat and truck wrapped or have my name printed on all my equipment. Most of the time, when I go to a tournament, the fishermen and the spectators will know who I am, and the prodClick to enlargeucts I fish and why when they see me or before they leave.” This week, we’ll take a look at the life of Clay Dyer – one of the most-amazing and unique anglers in the world of bass fishing.

Question: Clay, how long have you been fishing bass tournaments?
Dyer: I first started fishing bass tournaments in 1992.

Question: What circuits do you fish?
Dyer: Currently, I fish the FLW Tour, the FLW Series and in any other big tournaments I can.

Question: Clay, you just hosted a national TV show, didn’t you?
Dyer: Yes, I hosted the BassFan Army Weekend WarriClick to enlargeor Championship on the Sportsman’s Channel, and I’m looking at the possibility of doing more television work.

Question: You’ve had a really-busy year this past year, haven’t you?
Dyer: I’ve had a busy year, but it’s been a great year. I’ve had a lot of speaking engagements all over the country, conducted a number of fishing seminars for my sponsors and have fished all the tournaments I could. I’ve been in 30-different states this year. In 2007, I was on the road 250 days. So far this year, I’Click to enlargeve been on the road 225 days, and the year’s not over yet.

Question: Why have you had such a long association with Strike King lures and been on the company’s pro team for 11 years?
Dyer: I’m first and foremost a tournament fisherman. So, I want to fish with the lures that give me the best opportunity to win. I know that when I’m fishing with Strike King lures, I have the best chance to be in the winner’s circle in every one of my tournament competitions. When I’m competing against the best fishermen in the nation, I’ve got to have the best lures I possibly can to be competitive. I’ve proven that the best lures I can fish with are Strike King lures. Strike King has so many products that there’s rarely a day on the water when I can’t pick up a Strike King lure and solve a fishing problem. Regardless of the water, the weather or the region of the country in which I’m fishing, I fish Strike King lures because I want to give myself the best chance I can to win that tournament.
