Editor’s Note: Al Morris of Springfield, Utah, a Hunter’s Specialties’ pro staffer, and his hunting partner, Garvin Young, won their third World Coyote Calling Contest in late 2008 held in Cortez, Colorado. No team ever had won three World Coyote Calling Contests before, and it was also the first back-to-back win.Click to enlarge

Question: What was special about the place where you hunted?
Morris: There were two major factors that made this place so special. We located an area that homed a number of coyotes, and more importantly, this region hadn’t been called to by many predator hunters. In the 2007 World Coyote Calling Contest, the team who finished in second place actually had more coyotes in their area than we did, but their coyotes were highly educated.

Question: How do you know the coyotes the second-place team found in 2007 were smarter than the coyotes you and Garvin located that year?Click to enlarge
Morris: We went down to the place where they hunted and started howling. We found about 100 coyotes and a lot of scat and tracks. We made some test stands, but those coyotes wouldn’t come into us. So, when you find a tremendous number of coyotes somewhere, and you call to them but they won’t come in, you can be confident they’ve been called to previously.Click to enlarge

Question: How did you know the coyotes you took in the 2008 championship weren’t very educated?
Morris: We didn’t know for certain. However, when we started making stands and coyotes began coming in like water pouring out a boot, we knew they hadn’t been called to very much.
