Special Fall Snapper Season at Alabama’s Gulf Coast – Bigger and Better Than Ever

Day 5: Boat-Stopping Wahoo and Other Saltwater Fish on Alabama’s Gulf Coast with Captain Randy Boggs

Editor’s Note: Every weekend from October 1 until 12:01 am on November 22 this fall, anglers can catch and keep their limits of red snapper on Alabama’s Gulf Coast. But there’s more than just snapper biting. This week we’ll talk to captains in Orange Beach about the trips they’ve taken at the first of snapper season. You can see just what red snapper season will be like for you and your family, if you head to Alabama’s Gulf Coast during October and November. For more information on fishing guides and charter boats, lodging accommodations, restaurants and entertainment on Alabama's Gulf Coast, call Gulf Shores & Orange Beach Tourism at 800-745-SAND (7263), or go to www.orangebeach.com. You also can get a fishing report three times each week by checking-out the "What's Biting?" column at www.orangebeach.com/fishing/biting/.

On a head boat, you don’t expect to catch a wahoo, and you certainly don’t expect it to be a 70-pound-drag dragon, line-stretching, rod-bending, boat-stopping monster like the one that was caught on the “Reel Surprise,” from SanRoc Cay in Orange Beach, Ala., and captained by Randy Boggs. “We were running 22 miles an hour when the big wahoo hit. The fish nearly took all the line before I could stop the boat and let the angler reel in to the boat.” But the wahoo wasn’t the only story of the fishing trip. Boggs and his party brought-in red snapper, amberjacks, triggerfish and vermilion snapper. “This was one of the best catches I’ve seen on a 10- to a 12-hour boat trip. There wasn’t a sad face that got off the boat. Everyone had more fish than they could eat in a month or more and a great adventure to go home and tell their friends about.” Let’s let Captain Boggs tell us about his trip, his party and his catch.
