Catching West Texas Catfish for the Bragging and the Eating

Day 5: Great Catfishing for Catfish at Braunig and Calaveras Lakes in West Texas

Editor’s Note: Because of the long growing season, the abundance of food and the low human population numbers, west Texas may very well home some of the best fishing for catfish in the nation. "Due to the long growing season, this section of Texas can produce more and bigger catfish quicker than most areas of Texas and anywhere else in the country," says Bobby Farquhar, regional program director for west Texas for Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD).

Power-plant lakes, Braunig and Calaveras, are both located just south of San Antonio and are very fertile and extremely productive. We see a lot of catfish coming out of both these lakes. One of the big advantages of these two lakes is there is a large amount of bank access at them, so quite a few people from San Antonio can drive out to these two lakes and catfish from the bank." You can expect to catch all three varieties of catfish in both these lakes with channel cats the most dominant.

"I know we have fishermen who travel from all over the state to fish Choke Canyon for cats. Too, the border lakes of Amistad and Falcon offer tremendous catfishing. I'm not sure that any lakes in Texas yield more catfish than Braunig and Calaveras. These two lakes also have redfish from the coast in them, and the Department has stocked shad and tilapia in them as a forage base. So, I believe that our section of Texas is a catfishermen's heaven." If you have fishing for catfish on your mind, and your wife has a fish fry planned for the near future, pack your gear, and head to west Texas with its plentiful catfish where you'll find the catfish biting.
