The Best Place to Find a Buck Deer in the Early Season with Bowhunter Jerry Simmons
Day 5: Bowhunter Jerry Simmons Reminds Us that Deer Don’t Read Books or Magazines or Watch Outdoor TV Shows
Editor’s Note: Nationally-known bowhunter Jerry Simmons of Jasper, Alabama, gives us more bowhunting tips for early-season deer.
Although you can learn plenty from studying books and magazines, carefully watching outdoor TV shows and reading everything you can find on the internet about bowhunting deer, Simmons cautions you to remember that deer don't do these things. "So, don't go into the woods with any pre-conceived ideas about where the early-season bucks should be," Simmons advises. "Read the deer sign you find, and let it tell you where to locate the bucks, regardless of how ridiculous these hunting spots seem. Also remember that various weather conditions may keep some of the deer's foods from growing one year. You may find deer feeding on hickory nuts, poke sallet and other plants you've never before considered hunting over. To take a buck with your bow each season, scout intensively before and during the season, and let the deer teach you where, when and how to hunt each time you go into the woods."
