John's Journal... Entry 11 - Day 2
Click to enlargeMCKENNA RANCH - ALL YEAR LONG HOG HUNTING

At the McKenna Ranch in Pachuta, Mississippi, you can hunt hogs all year. "We plant corn, and the hogs come into the corn off two major creek systems," Steve McKenna, the ranch's owner, explains. "The best hog hunting usually takes place in the spring and summer. During this time, we also can bait for hogs."

At the McKenna Ranch you can take hogs with either a bow and arrow or a black-powder rifle. Because hogs have an extremely keen sense of smell, you must camouflage or eliminate your human odor to have successful hog hunting. I also recommend that you wear rubber shoes so as not to leave any odor.

Also to effectively take more hogs, you need to use a deer grunt call to call in the hogs. I learned this tactic from Toxey Haas, president of Mossy Oak Camouflage Company. By grunting on the deer call's grunt tube with a little more air than you use on it to call deer, you can call in the porkers.

For more information about hunting hogs at the McKenna Ranch, call or drop them a letter at 741 County Road 313, Pachuta, MS 39347 (601) 727-4926.
