The FSA will pay landowners in some areas to plant the longleaf pines instead of the loblolly and slash pines currently grown for commercial use. You may find monies available for cost-sharing programs in conjunction with the CRP from different state and federal programs to plant along the borders of croplands and pastures. Longleaf pines provide instant quail habitat, since the trees grow tall and narrow. Too, some states offer money to participate in burning programs. The Federal program can be viewed at www.fsa.usda.gov/dafp/cepd/crinfo.htm.

* Georgia also has begun an aggressive quail-restoration program. You can contact Reggie Thackston, the GADNR Coordinator BWI programs at (912) 994-7583.
