How Many Calls Do You Need for Turkey Hunting
EDITOR'S
NOTE: Eddie Salter of Evergreen, Alabama, makes his living as a professional
hunter, caller and seminar speaker. He's a longtime, personal friend and
has helped me learn how to hunt turkeys more effectively. Salter works
with Hunter's Specialties.
Question: Why do you take more than one call in
the woods?
Answer:
So many times I've gotten into the woods and started calling a bird and
then could tell that he just didn't like my call too much. I'd start laying
all my calls out and going through them. I'd pick up a slate, a box, or
maybe a glass or a aluminum call, any type friction call, even a snuff
can or a tube type call, and then the call he cut me off with is the one
I'd begin using. I think that gobblers like different calls because different
hens in the woods have various voices they use for calling and don't all
sound alike. Each hen has a different cadence and perhaps one is more
raspy, another more clear, etc. You have to discover which call the tom
likes to hear and is accustomed to hearing. If I find which one he likes,
I'll stick with it.
