ELK HUNTING WITH RENOWNED OUTDOORSMAN, STEVE PUPPE
Elk Calls for Beginners
EDITOR'S
NOTE: For the past 25 years, Steve Puppe of Hamilton, Minnesota, has
been very fortunate to gain a wealth of hunting knowledge and experience
which has given him the opportunity to be featured in several hunting
videos and national magazines. He is known for his public speaking and
currently is a co-host of the popular television series "Outdoor
Expeditions" on the Outdoor Channel. Puppe enjoys sharing his knowledge
and experience with hunters -- young and old alike. This week Puppe will
tell us about his experiences hunting elk and will walk us through some
of the most-overlooked steps to elk-hunting success.
QUESTION:
What elk call would you recommend for beginners, and why?
ANSWER: For beginners, I'd recommend probably some type of external reed
call. A diaphragm call takes a little more practice to use effectively.
I would recommend something like a Magnum Masters Call or Real Cow Talker.
Both of those are good calls, and a beginner can generally pick them up
fairly easily.
QUESTION:
Is there a specific way you can blow them?
ANSWER: Yeah, the Real Cow Talker is a call that you can pinch. You blow
through it and then let off to create different sounds. When you pinch
the call, you can produce a high pitch, and when you let off you get the
low pitch of the cow. The Magnum Master is basically the same thing. You
slide the call in your mouth, pinch down on the reed and let off, and
you get the same effect. The Magnum Masters is more of an excited call
and a little more of an aggressive call. For the more advanced caller,
I'd suggest a diaphragm call with a bugle tube, if the hunter can do that.
If he can't use a diaphragm call with a tube, then he should use an external
call with a tube. I use the tube more as a locater call when the bull's
a long distance away. When the bull comes closer, I'll use cow calls and
lower the pitch. If the bull is a long way off, often the call will bounce
into a canyon.
