John's Journal... Entry 132, Day 4

TWO-ON-ONE WHITETAILS

Hunting Hills and Hollows

EDITOR'S NOTE: Two hunters can take twice as many whitetails as one hunter can, and two hunters often bag bigger whitetails than one hunter will. Many of the trophy whitetails bagged in America today are taken when hunters double-up on bucks, because trophy whitetails know more about the hunters who hunt them than the sportsmen understand about the deer that sport high racks and heavy body weights. Find out this week how doubling-up on deer greatly can increase your chances for bagging that trophy buck.

Jim Thurmond hunts hills and hollows in the northern part of my home state of Alabama. When I hunt with Thurmond, he walks through the hollows hoping to locate bedded-down deer or deer on the edges of thick cane-breaks. I walk just under the lip of the hill but on the same side of the hill as Thurmond, trying to remain 75 to 100 yards ahead of him.

If Thurmond jumps a buck, the deer usually runs down the hollow and crosses either side of the hill, presenting me with the shot. If I jump a deer off the side of the hill, most of the time the deer runs down the side of the hill into the bottom and up on the other side of the hill, offering Thurmond a shot. By using this team tactic of hunting bottoms and ridges, we move from one mountain to the next and hunt every bottom and both ridges throughout the mountain system. Most of the time the deer will slip out of the bottom and offer the man on the side of the ridge the shot. That's why we alternate walking slowly and quietly through the valleys.

Intensive scouting will tell you whether a big buck is in an area. Rattling, grunting and using two-hunter tactics may get that trophy deer to show himself so you can take a shot. Although most of us prefer to be lone wolves when we deer hunt, statistically, hunters who hunt together to attempt to bag big bucks consistently take more and larger deer than lone hunters do.
