FISHING TIPS FROM JAY YELAS

Jay Yelas' Lines Of Choice

EDITOR'S NOTE: Jay Yelas of Tyler, Texas, has fished on the B.A.S.S. Masters tournament circuit for many years, qualifying for the BASS Masters Classic often and winning the 2002 BASS Masters Classic.

QUESTION: Jay, what's your favorite line?
ANSWER: I use different types of fishing lines for different situations. I use Berkley's Vanish fluorocarbon line for clear-water fishing and monofilament for most of my spinner baits, flipping and shallow and diving crankbaits. I fish with Berkley FireLine for pitching worms and jigs in vegetation, and if I'm throwing buzzbaits back into lily pads. If I hook a big bass, I have the leverage to force it out of heavy cover. FireLine will cut vegetation like butter. Since there are so many types of fishing line available, one can mix and match his equipment to what he's doing.

Different lines have various applications and can make a person a better fisherman if he uses them in the right situation. I can't imagine fishing Lake Michigan, with clear water up to 20 feet deep, and not using Vanish. Vanish is an invisible line that has half the stretch of monofilament. So it's perfect to use with a spinning rod. At the same time, I can't imagine pitching a jig in vegetation without FireLine or a braided line to cut through the vegetation.
