John's Journal... Entry 199, Day 4 HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR BASS-FISHING GUIDE To Take A Big Bass EDITOR'S NOTE: IIn my opinion, the best way to find and catch the most bass any day you fish is to hire a guide who’s on the water everyday and should know where the bass are holding. If you wish to catch a large bass, you must understand that you’ll not get many bites during a day’s fishing. “When I fish for big bass, I still may use a Carolina-rig, but I’ll fish with much bigger baits in deeper water in the main part of the lake,” Charlie Ingram, a guide with Lake Eufaula Guide Service in Lake Eufaula, Alabama, reported. “Instead of using a 6-inch plastic worm, I’ll rig with a 10-inch worm or fish a large, deep-diving crankbait. I believe a client must practice patience and make a lot of casts to take a big bass. He must understand that he won’t get many strikes fishing this way, or else he won’t be happy with me or his day on the water. Although most anglers say they want to catch a really big bass, they don’t want to use the tactics and baits that will produce those bass.” A
bass-fishing guide can . . . But your guide doesn’t work like a computer. He, like any other human being, has feelings, emotions, needs and wants. If you treat a guide like your best friend, he’ll try to teach you more and help you achieve your goals for the day than if you treat him like a hired-hand. Also, if you deal with a guide as you will your best friend, after two or three trips with him, he’ll become just that. Then you haven’t hired a fishing guide. You’ll go fishing with a buddy who’ll do everything in his power to help you catch bass. I’ve had the good fortune in my lifetime to fish with some of the greatest bass guides in the nation. And these guides have improved my bass-catching ability and have blessed my life by becoming my personal friends. How do you get the most out of a bass-fishing guide? The same way you get the most out of a friendship – give more than you receive.
