John's Journal... Entry 207, Day 4 SPINNER-BAIT TRICKS AND TACTICS OF THE PROS Alton Jones and Roland Martin EDITOR'S NOTE: A thirteen-year veteran of the B.A.S.S. tour, Alton Jones, 40, of Waco, Texas, has fished in eight BASS Masters Classics and has had two career wins. Professional angler and TV fishing-show host, Roland Martin, 63, of Clewiston, Florida, has won 19 tournaments and has won the Angler-of-the-Year title on the B.A.S.S. circuit more than any other fisherman. Alton Jones says he always tries to cast past his intended target with his spinner bait. "I want the blades in full motion as the spinner bait approaches the strike zone. Sometimes I'll bring the spinner bait up next to a stump or a log and actually let it helicopter down to the bottom. At other times, I'll bump it against the stump and let it fall on slack line instead of on a tight line. The slack line gives it a totally different helicopter motion than if you keep your line tight and just quick-reel in the bait. To allow the bait to fall on a slack line, I'll drop my rod tip." For the last couple of years, Roland Martin has used the Leverage spinner bait. "This spinner bait has a neat design because a cable attaches the hook to the rest of the frame," Martin says. "The cable prevents many of the bass that attack the spinner bait from coming off the hook. Because of the cable, the point of the hook gets much further in the bass's mouth than with conventional spinner baits that feature a wire arm instead of a cable arm. I believe that this spinner bait eliminates short bites and helps me catch more of the fish that attack the bait than I'll take with a wire-arm spinner bait." TOMORROW: JAY YELAS
