John's Journal... Entry 209, Day 3

KENT DRISCOLL ON CRANKBAITING FOR CRAPPIE

How Driscoll Got Started

EDITOR'S NOTE: Kent Driscoll of Cordova, Tennessee, enjoys crappie fishing so much that he fishes the Crappie U.S.A. and North American Crappie Tournament trails and belongs to the Troll Mate Crappie Club in Memphis, Tennessee. For the next week, I'll tell you about the tactics Driscoll employs for the summer months to take suspended crappie. This week we'll learn about crankbaiting for big crappie.

Question: How did you get started fishing crankbaits for crappie?
Answer: A local guy in Mississippi where I like to fish has fished with crankbaits for crappie for a long time. He showed a guy that I know, who told me and now crankbaiting for crappies is catching on. Crankbaiting has consistently caught more and bigger crappie. The beautiful thing about crankbaiting is that no matter how hard the wind blows, you can fish. Wind is a major factor when I fish. Ten to 20 m.p.h. winds are no problem because the crankbaits are running true 100 feet behind you. If your baits bounce around in the water and don't run a consistent pattern, you won't catch fish. Most people longline crankbaits, but I only longline two rods until I locate the fish.

Question: What kind of wobble do you want on the baits?
Answer: I just want a natural wobble-not an irregular wobble that may scare the fish. Also, if my rod is wobbling or surging, then I know my bait isn't running right, and I won't catch crappie.

Question: What color works best and when?
Answer: On a bright day, use bright colors, and on dark days, fish with dark colors. If its high pressure with lots of light, I'll use chartreuse, hot pink and reds. On an overcast day, I'll fish with black, plum or navy colors.

Question: What else do you catch on the crankbaits besides crappie?
Answer: Unfortunately, we catch bass, catfish and striped bass.
