John's Journal... Entry 212, Day 2

DOUBLE THE VALUE OF YOUR HUNTING LEASE

How To Catch 30 Bass An Hour Every Time You Go To A Lake & How To Have 2-Pound Bluegills To Catch

We've known for years that biologists can train bluegills to take pelleted feed from an automatic feeder. In recent years, fishery scientists have trained bass, also known as feeder bass, to also take pelleted feed. Now, when a feeder goes off, containing a special mixture of high-protein mixed feed pellets, bass and bream will go on a feeding spree, just like deer will come to a spin feeder every time the feeder goes off. However, when a fish feeder goes off, the bass not only eat the pelleted feed, but they also eat the bream feeding the pelleted feed. After setting up several feeders around your pond, then regardless of weather, wind or water conditions or time of year, when the feeder goes off, bass and bream will bite.

My oldest son, John, went fishing with his Uncle Archie at Archie's farm pond, that Southeastern Pond Management takes care of, in February 2003, on one of the coldest days of the year. I had little hope for them having a successful bass-fishing trip. However, when my son arrived home, he kept saying over and over again, "Dad, you just wouldn't believe it. We caught more bass than I'd ever caught in my life. The weather was cold, and the wind was blowing, but the bass were biting. I caught 2- to 4-pound bass on almost every cast."

How To Take 30 Bass An Hour: If four automatic spin feeders located around your pond go off at various times during the day, you can have bass on a feeding spree all day. You certainly won't find catching 30 bass per hour a problem. But remember these bass and bream don't just eat the pelleted feed. The bass feed off the bluegills and the threadfin shad stocked in the lake. I've stood on my brother's dock, never getting into a boat, and caught 30 bass consistently in an hour, every time I've fished at his pond. These bass will weigh from 2- to 5-pounds each and I'll catch a 6- to 7-pound bass about every other trip.

How to Have 2-Pound Bluegills to Catch: Southeastern Pond Management stocks coppernose bluegills into the ponds they manage. These bluegills, which come from Florida, tend to grow faster than the common bluegill. This genetically-superior bluegill grows even faster because it will eat pelleted feed. For this reason, you can have catchable and eatable-sized bluegills within 1-1/2 years after stocking and bluegills weighing up to 2-pounds within 2 to 3 years after stocking. To keep the pond viable and producing, you'll need to catch and eat a certain number of these bluegills every year to make room for more.
