John's Journal... Entry 76, Day 5

How To Get A Hung-Up Gobbler Unhung

click to enlargeEDITOR'S NOTE: Eddie Salter of Evergreen, Alabama, makes his living as a professional hunter, caller and seminar speaker. He's a longtime, personal friend and has helped me learn how to hunt turkeys more effectively. Salter works with Hunter's Specialties.

Question: How do you get a turkey to come in that's hung up out there at about 60 yards and he's strutting, drumming, and doing everything that a grown turkey should do -- except coming in to where you can get a shot. What can you do to make him come to you?
click to enlargeAnswer: A lot of times that's a battle that's hard to win. You've got to ask yourself whether or not he has hens with him. If he doesn't, I think you need to go back and pull the silent treatment on him. I'll just quit calling. That's one of the hardest things to do when you really love to call. When a guy really loves to call and likes to hear himself call -- particularly someone who's been on the turkey-calling contest circuit -- will end up calling too much. I know on a lot of occasions, I'll put my calls down and maybe occasionally pick up a slate call and cluck and purr just a little bit when I have a gobbler hung-up out in front of me. I've been really successful that way with the silent treatment.
